Spark Horizons focuses on those students who are new enrollees or up to sophomore year of college. The availability of exemplary, caring role models is valuable for all students, but may
be especially critical to the retention and success of underrepresented, first-generation college students who do not have college role models at home.
We offer mentorship, financial literacy, and STEM exposure to these students as well. However, we aim to help them connect with organizations, possible internships, and tutoring. The mentees will have the opportunity to be paired with actual professionals in their desired career path. They have the chance to ask questions, observe the workplace, and learn about a specific company. Spark Horizons can help provide career guidance, encouragement during their academic programs, advice on important course and fieldwork, and opportunities to make professional contacts.
These are the five competencies that we focus on when supporting college age students:
- Conflict Management
- External Awareness
- Critical Thinking
